Let’s have a talk.
The point of my tumblr is not to bring light to feminist issues, but when I saw this ad today walking home from work I stopped dead in my tracks. (The ad I saw was on a cab in Boston, rather than a billboard somewhere tropical but it’s the same ad).
If you don’t notice what’s immediately wrong about that ad let me help you. Rape. That ad is advertising rape. Here are three reasons why:
1) Sending mixed signals. (Pretty sure this has been used to defend rape)
2) You have just turned that woman into an object (thus making it easier to rape her, and devaluing her as a human)
3) Alcohol ad. This is not new for these. Beer ads do it all the time. I feel this one reads as particularly “date rape-ish.”
This is like right out of Killing Us Softly. Jean Killbourne should collect this ad. Please take this issue seriously, here’s a link to Killing Us Softly 3 on youtube - Please watch me
We, as people, need to take what we see in advertising seriously. This is not appropriate, and the person who created this ad should be shown some statistics on women, rape, and alcohol.
